Questions, answered.
Everything about importing a plan, logging, what Pro costs, and what happens to your data. If your question is not here, email us and a real person will answer it.
Getting started
Do I need to create an account to start?
No. Holdfast creates an anonymous account for your device on first launch, so there is no sign up screen and you go straight into setup. You can attach Sign in with Apple or Google later from the You tab so your plan survives a new phone.
How do I get my meal plan into the app?
Three ways. Paste the plan as text, add photos or screenshots, or upload PDFs. You can attach up to four files, and text and attachments are separate, so adding a photo clears pasted text.
Can it read a PDF, or only photos?
Both. PDFs are read and sent to the plan reader alongside any photos. Photos can come from your camera one at a time, or several at once from your library.
What if I do not have a plan from a coach yet?
You can start with a ready made plan on the import screen. If the plan reader cannot be reached, Holdfast builds a plan from your setup answers instead and tells you on the review screen that it could not read what you added.
What if the plan reader gets a number wrong?
The review screen lets you tap any meal and correct its name, items, amounts, and macros before you confirm. Correcting an item does not move your plan's stated daily target, because that headline number is what your coach wrote.
Does it use AI to guess the calories in my food?
Your plan's numbers come off the document you gave it, and you can correct every line before you confirm. Searching for a food pulls USDA food data, and a barcode pulls the product's own label. Holdfast only estimates when you log a photo of your plate or describe a meal in your own words, and it shows you what it read so you can fix it before anything is logged.
What does setup ask me?
Your sex assigned at birth and activity level, birthday, height and weight, your goal, training days, meals per day and eating window, allergens, dietary pattern, and the foods you love and skip. Then you import your plan and review what Holdfast read.
Logging your food
How many ways can I log food?
Seven. Search the food database, enter macros by hand, snap a photo of your plate, describe a meal in your own words, scan a barcode, tap straight from your own plan or recents or favourites, or let Smart Swap, Fix My Day, and Eating Out log it for you.
Does Holdfast scan barcodes?
Yes. There is a live camera scanner, a fallback that reads a barcode out of a photo in your library, and a field to type the digits by hand. Lookups are backed by Open Food Facts.
What does a barcode scan tell me?
Whether that packaged food fits what you have left today, worked out against your live remaining macros, with a one tap log if it does. If it does not fit, you can jump straight to the food search instead.
Can I photograph my meal instead of searching?
Yes, and it is free, but it does need AI turned on, because the picture is read on our server. Snap your plate and Holdfast identifies it and matches it against today's planned meals, then you confirm in one tap. If it genuinely cannot read the photo it says so rather than inventing numbers.
Where do the food numbers come from?
Search combines the built in Holdfast food library with live USDA FoodData Central. The screen names the real source of each result, and when you are offline it tells you and searches only the built in list.
What exactly does Holdfast track?
Calories, protein, carbs, fat, and fiber for every entry and every daily target, plus water against a daily goal you can change. Weight is tracked as weigh ins over time, with a trend that looks past day to day water swings, measured against your goal weight.
Can I log for yesterday or a past day?
Yes, for yesterday. Yesterday stays open until the end of today, so you can add a meal you forgot. Days before that are closed.
Staying on plan
What is Fix My Day?
When a day goes off plan, Fix My Day looks at what you have left and suggests foods that get you back on target, filtered by where you are, at home, out, at a store, or with no way to cook, and how long you have. Anything that clashes with your allergens or dietary pattern is removed first.
Does Fix My Day cost anything?
No, and there is no limit on it either. It is free every time you need it, on the free tier and on Pro alike. We never charge you to recover from a bad day.
How does a Smart Swap work?
Pick a food from your plan or from what you already logged, add constraints like high protein, no cook, or budget, and Holdfast ranks portion matched alternatives that keep your calories and protein close. It never suggests something you are allergic to or that breaks your dietary pattern.
How many Smart Swaps do I get for free?
Two a week, and they come back every Monday. It is a weekly allowance rather than a lifetime total, so it refills whether you use it or not. Pro makes Smart Swaps unlimited.
Does the app notice when I go over, or do I have to ask?
It notices. The moment a logged meal pushes your day meaningfully off plan, one dismissible recovery card appears on Today. It shows at most once a day and never logs a recovery for you on its own.
What is shift to tomorrow?
It eases tomorrow's calorie, carb, and fat targets by roughly what you went over today, so the week still nets out to your coach's intent. It never touches protein, absorbs at most about 40 percent of a macro's daily target, and can be undone in one tap.
Can it help when I am eating out?
Yes. The Eating Out screen ranks restaurant options against the share of the day that one meal should take, with modes for best fit, high protein, lower calorie, and low fat, plus a note you can give the kitchen. It hides anything you avoid.
Does Holdfast build a grocery list?
Yes, from the meals on your confirmed plan plus what you actually log, sorted into categories with modes for meal prep, no cook, and high protein. You can add your own items, and your ticks and additions survive when the list rebuilds.
Coach and progress
Does the AI coach actually know my plan?
Yes. Your real plan, your remaining macros, and your profile are given to the coach before it answers, and replies can drop you straight into a swap, Fix My Day, eating out, or your grocery list.
Is the coach medical advice?
No. Holdfast gives general nutrition and wellness information only, and every coach screen carries that disclaimer. It is not medical or dietetic advice. Talk to a qualified professional for medical or dietary decisions.
What do the weekly target, XP, and badges do?
You pick how many days a week you want to log, 5, 6 or 7, or none at all, and Holdfast counts the weeks you hit it rather than the days in a row. An ordinary off day inside a week that still hits costs you nothing. Logging and using features also earns XP across twelve named levels, with badges and rotating daily challenges. Everything rewards showing up, and nothing punishes a slip.
Can I turn the game layer off completely?
Yes. Quiet Mode hides XP, levels, badges, and challenges, and it does not cost anything. The plan, the logging, and the recovery tools all work exactly the same with it on.
Will one bad day wreck my score?
No. The headline number is a forgiving rolling seven day plan followed score, not a daily pass or fail, and days you did not track are left out rather than counted as zero.
Can I send a summary to my coach?
Yes. The weekly recap builds a clean snapshot of your last seven days, and one tap opens the share sheet to send it. It only leaves your phone when you tap send.
Can I try the app before logging anything real?
Yes. Preview a sample month from the Progress tab to fill the app with sample data. Everything sample derived is labelled, and sample data can never be logged or shared as if it were yours.
Pro and billing
What is actually behind Pro?
Two limits and a few extras. Free accounts get 2 Smart Swaps a week and 3 coach messages a day, and Pro makes both unlimited. Pro also opens Plan Ahead, Your first month, and some of the themes and widget styles. Fix My Day is free and unlimited on both tiers.
What can I do without paying?
Everything except those limits and the Pro extras. Importing your plan, daily logging, photo and barcode logging, your full macro breakdown, the grocery list, eating out picks, Fix My Day, progress, the weekly recap, and reminders all work on the free tier.
How is Pro billed?
Pro is an auto renewing subscription sold through Apple In App Purchase, with a monthly and an annual option. Prices are set by the App Store and shown in your own currency on the paywall.
Is there a free trial?
Yes, one week on both plans, when your Apple ID has not already used one. The paywall reads the real trial length and your eligibility from the App Store, so it never offers you a trial you cannot actually get.
How do I get Pro back on a new phone?
Tap Restore purchases in the You tab or on the paywall. It asks the App Store for purchases tied to your Apple ID and re enables Pro if it finds one. If there is nothing to restore it says so rather than unlocking anything.
How do I cancel?
Tap Manage subscription in the You tab, which opens your Apple Account subscription settings. Cancelling and changing plans happens there, not inside Holdfast.
If I cancel, do I lose Pro immediately?
No. Cancelling stops the renewal, and you keep Pro until the period you already paid for ends. Access only turns off when the subscription truly expires.
Can Holdfast refund me?
No. Apple handles all payments, cancellations, and refunds. Holdfast never receives or stores your card details and cannot issue a refund, so refund requests go to Apple.
What happens if my payment fails?
You keep Pro through the retry window rather than losing it immediately, and Holdfast can notify you to update your payment method.
Privacy and your data
Do you sell my data?
No. Your personal, health, and nutrition data is never sold and never used for advertising. It goes to the service providers needed to run the app, and to a coach only if you connect one, which is off until you do. The full detail is in our Privacy Policy.
Which AI company processes my chat, my plan, and my food photos?
Anthropic's Claude handles all of it. Coach chat, imported plan photos and PDFs, food photos, meals you describe in words, and tidying your grocery list are sent from the Holdfast backend to Claude for analysis. The API key stays on our server and never reaches your phone.
Is my data sent to any other AI service?
Not today. Our server has a route that would ask an image provider for an illustrative picture of a food, sending a food name and nothing else, but no screen in this version of the app ever requests one. Our Privacy Policy lists it because the route exists and could be switched on.
Do I have to agree before any AI feature runs?
Yes. AI consent is a separate switch that is never pre ticked, and you can accept the Terms and decline AI. You can change your mind any time under You, then AI features, and it takes effect immediately.
What still works if I say no to AI?
Most of the app. Logging, your plan, the grocery list, Fix My Day, Smart Swaps, and eating out picks all work with AI off. Reading a plan document, reading a food photo, and matching a meal you describe need it on, and the coach answers from your own numbers instead of from a model.
Does Holdfast track my location?
Only on the Near you map, only while you have it open, and only if you allow it. Your coordinates go to the OpenStreetMap Overpass service to find restaurants around you. They are never sent to Holdfast servers and are never stored.
Where is my data stored?
Your account, plans, and logs are held by our cloud hosting and database providers and served by the Holdfast API, primarily in the United States. Login tokens live in the iOS Keychain on your device.
Does Holdfast ever see my card number?
No. Subscriptions are bought through Apple In App Purchase and managed with RevenueCat, so Apple handles payment and Holdfast never receives your card details.
How do I permanently delete my account and data?
Open the You tab, then Personal details, then Delete account. That removes your account and your data from our servers, including plans, logs, day summaries, subscription records, and coach threads, and it cannot be undone. Admin audit records and crash reports are not tied to your account and survive it, which our Privacy Policy spells out.
Is signing out the same as deleting my account?
No. Sign out, Reset app, and Clear data on this device, which is under My data, remove Holdfast from that device and revoke your session. They do not delete your account from our servers. For that, use Delete account under Personal details, where the final Delete everything button is permanent.
Can I get a copy of my data?
Yes. Under You, then Personal details, then My data, you can export a Readable record or a Data file (JSON) of your whole account, including every plan, log, weigh in, and coach conversation, shared through the iOS share sheet. If our server cannot be reached, you get the copy stored on your phone instead, and the file says so.
Does deleting my account cancel my subscription?
No. Your Apple subscription is separate. Cancel it in your Apple Account subscription settings so it does not keep renewing.
Device and notifications
What reminders can I turn on?
Meal time nudges, an evening recovery nudge, a weekly review, and water reminders. Meal, recovery, and weekly are on by default, and water is off until you turn it on. Tapping a reminder opens the screen it is about.
Can I choose when I get reminded?
Yes. Under You, then Notifications, you can set a reminder time and a quiet hours range. Any reminder that would land inside your quiet window is moved to the end of it, including windows that wrap past midnight.
Can I turn off one kind of notification without losing the rest?
Yes. Your week so far, come back nudges, milestones, and billing alerts each have their own switch, saved to your account, and the reminders scheduled on your phone have one switch each too.
Can I lock the app with Face ID?
Not yet. There is no app lock in this version of Holdfast. Your iPhone's own passcode and Face ID still protect the phone, and your login tokens are kept in the iOS Keychain.
Does Holdfast work offline?
Partly. Your profile and confirmed plan are stored on your device so they survive a relaunch with no connection, and the grocery list, weekly recap, and swap logic run locally. Food you log while offline is saved on your phone and sent when you are back online. Reading a food photo or a meal you describe needs a connection.
Is there an Android or iPad version?
Not right now. Holdfast is an iPhone app. There is no Android version and no iPad layout yet.
Does Holdfast sync with Apple Health?
Not in the current version. The integration is built and will read your weight and activity and write your logged nutrition, but it is turned off in the shipping app. We will announce it here when it goes live.
